Margherio Delivers on the Mound and at the Plate

Maximo Margherio spent Sunday doing a little bit of everything for the Plymouth Generals 12U.

He took over on the mound and battled through the middle innings. He helped keep Plymouth close while the Generals fought back from an early deficit. Then, when they needed a big swing, Margherio delivered that too—launching a solo home run to center field in an 8-5 loss to GBS South Bay Blue 12U.

Plymouth fell behind 3-0 in the first, but the Generals punched right back. Colin O. singled to left before George C. crushed a two-run homer to center, cutting the deficit to one.

Then Margherio took over on the mound.

He gave Plymouth 3⅔ innings against a South Bay lineup that finished with 12 hits. Maximo struck out two and did not issue a walk, giving the Generals important outs while their offense kept chasing the lead.

Then he made even more noise with the bat.

With Plymouth trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the second, Margherio worked the count and drove a fly ball over the fence in center. His solo shot made it 4-3 and brought the Generals roaring right back into the game.

The game stayed tight from there. South Bay pushed the lead to 5-3 in the third, but Plymouth’s defense came up with a huge play in the fourth. Bennett N. and Brady T. combined on a line-drive double play that ended a scoring threat and left a runner stranded at third.

Plymouth turned that stop into its biggest rally of the afternoon.

Colin opened the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer to left. George followed with a walk and stole second before Brady ripped a hard ground-ball single into left, bringing George home with the tying run.

Just like that, a 3-0 deficit was gone.

It was 5-5.

South Bay finally broke through with three runs in the fifth, and Plymouth could not put together one more comeback.

But Margherio’s fingerprints were all over the Generals’ fight: 3⅔ innings on the mound, no walks, two strikeouts and a home run that helped turn an early hole into a tie game.

Whenever Plymouth needed a big moment, Maximo seemed to be right in the middle of it.
