Webster Royals Slam the Door in Tight 5-4 Win

Webster Royals 14U Gold Lengyel spent most of Wednesday night protecting the smallest lead in baseball.

One run.

For four straight innings, that narrow advantage had to survive walks, errors, stolen bases and one Midlakes threat after another. Somehow, it did. Andrew L. and Kyler G. piled up strikeouts, the defense delivered when it mattered, and the Royals escaped with a 5-4 victory that grew more tense with every pitch.

The game did not begin Webster’s way. Midlakes scored twice with two outs in the top of the first, using a double and an error to grab a quick 2-0 lead.

Webster answered immediately.

Joey S. reached on an error, stole second and advanced to third on Kyler’s line-drive single. After the Royals loaded the bases, starting pitcher Andrew ripped a hard grounder into left to bring Joey home. Elias G. followed with a patient plate appearance, drawing a bases-loaded walk that scored Harley O. and tied the game.

The Royals came out swinging again in the second.

Ben C. walked and stole second before Joey drove a fly ball into right for an RBI double. Harley followed with a single, and Kyler lined another hit to right to score Joey and put Webster in front. Harley later stole home, stretching the lead to 5-3.

Those five runs had to stand for the rest of the night.

Midlakes trimmed the margin to one in the third, but Andrew prevented further damage by handling a popup himself. He worked 3⅓ innings, struck out five and repeatedly gave his defense opportunities to preserve the lead.

Then Kyler took the ball.

He entered with a runner on third and two outs in the fourth and immediately struck out the next batter. Midlakes put two runners aboard in the fifth, but Kyler escaped again by getting a fielder’s choice and a popup back to the mound.

The sixth inning brought maximum drama. A one-out walk became a runner on third after a stolen base and an error. The tying run stood only 90 feet away.
Kyler did not blink.

He recorded a foul-tip strikeout for the second out, then froze the final batter with strike three looking.

Game over.

Andrew and Kyler combined for 10 strikeouts, while Kyler added 2⅔ scoreless innings and two hits at the plate.

Midlakes kept applying pressure.

Webster kept slamming the door.
